You don’t act your age so why should you look it?

Thanks to the latest advances in natural skin care, you don’t have to. We bring you the latest anti-ageing treatments so you know what really works.

Hydration

Moisture retention is the key. As you age your skin naturally becomes drier and dry skin can look old before its time. Less collagen is produced and elastin fibres that provide elasticity wear out. These changes cause the skin to wrinkle and sag. Also, sebaceous glands get bigger but produce less sebum and the number of sweat glands decreases. To keep your skin in tip top condition, you need to retain as much moisture as possible in the skin. Avoid oil-free cosmetic products. Choose a cleanser that is creamy and hydrating. Look for products that are gentle and nourishing. Keeping your skin well hydrated helps to plump up wrinkles making them appear less prominent.

Exfoliate regularly

Exfoliating gets rid of dead skin cells to reveal fresher newer cells underneath and increases the cells turnover which tends to slow down as you age. Exfoliating also boosts blood circulation and allows the skin care products to penetrate more easily.

Use a night cream

Night creams contain special ingredients designed to work best when your skin is completely relaxed. Your skin enters a healing and replenishing phase while you sleep enabling it to take in more nutrients. Your skin also loses more moisture at night which means you need to apply a thicker moisturiser for night time.

Take care of your eyes

Unlike the rest of the face, the eye area has no surrounding oil glands, making the skin much thinner and very delicate. That’s why fine lines and crows feet show up in this area long before anywhere else. Use a specialised eye cream or gel to help minimise puffiness, fine lines and dark circles.

Add antioxidants

Antioxidants are your best defence against the damage done by free radical activity. (Free radicals – highly unstable molecules created through sun exposure, environmental toxins and normal cellular metabolism – breaks down collagen and elastin, leading to premature ageing). Your body produces fewer antioxidants with age and topical antioxidants can work with the skin to fight free radical damage. Here are the ones to look for:

    • Vitamins C & E: Vitamin C in skincare is referred to as ascorbyl Palmitate (C-Ester) or ascorbyl phosphate. It protects the skin from free radical damage, stimulates collagen growth to maintain and improve skin tone, firmness, flexibility and elasticity. It is also known for evening out pigmentation. Vitamin E is a must as it keeps skin soft and hydrated and protects the skin. Usually referred to as alphatocopherol in skin acre products. For the health of your skin choose skincare that contains vitamin C & E!
    • Vitamin A (Retinol): is a high potency vitamin that accelerates cellular renewal and as a result helps to eliminate wrinkles, fine lines and fade age spots. It also helps improve skin’s tone and texture while moisturizing dry/stressed skin.
    • Green tea, grape-seed extract and soy – these antioxidant ingredients are all helpful in absorbing free radicals, soy may also increase the skin’s production of collagen.

Soften wrinkles

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), are naturally occurring acids found in sugar cane (glycolic acid), sour milk (lactic), citrus fruits (citric), grape (tartaric) and apple (malic). AHAs improve the skin’s appearance by stimulating dead cells in the skins top layer, allowing them to shed more readily. Studies show that in strong enough concentrations (greater than 5%), AHAs improve skin smoothness and reduce wrinkles.

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) nicknames the “universal antioxidant” as it is soluble in both oil and water which means it can protect all parts of a cell from free radical damage. Helpful in fighting inflammation, diminishing fine lines and preventing the formation of new ones. It is found in all good wrinkle serums/creams

Hyaluronic Acid occurs naturally in the body and is used in skincare products due to its amazing ability to draw and retain water. It is extremely hydrating and produces smoother and younger looking skin.

Peptides area group of amino acids that enhance collagen production, smooth the lines and inhibit enzymes that break down the skin’s support structure therefore preventing future wrinkles. Only derma-e combines the two most powerful peptides into a single formulation.
